Emergency Preparedness
Weather related emergencies can occur at any time of the year. They can be the result of a snow or ice storm, hurricanes, tornados, and even a summer thunderstorm. They can last from several hours to several days, or even weeks.

Remember, emergencies can also happen while you are traveling. An accident or weather-related incident can cause significant traffic delays. When traveling, carry a small supply kit containing drinks, snacks, flashlight, and blanket.

The best way to deal with an emergency is to be prepared.

Here are some ideas to help you prepare for an emergency:
• Keep a flashlight handy
• Compile a disaster supply kit. Items should include flashlight, battery operated radio, extra batteries, water, nonperishable food, non-electric can opener, blankets, first aid supplies, pet supplies
• Tap extra water for drinking and sanitation during a power outage

Discuss with your family:
• Where your "safe room" is (basement or interior room)
• Where you will meet if separated
• Who is your out of town contact
• Where your Disaster Supply Kit is located
• Take pictures or videos of your home contents for insurance purposes and store at a friend's or relative's house
• Locate gas and water shut-off valves
• Get cash (without power, credit cards are unusable)
• Fill up the gas tank in your vehicle
• If you have a generator, make sure it’s been serviced, is filled with fuel, and you have back up fuel

Plan for your pets:
• Contact emergency shelters to find out if they accept pets
• Make sure vaccinations are up to date
• Listen to emergency updates
